Digital Storytelling Internships
We are searching for Fall Digital Storytelling Interns who can join an energetic team to organize, research, report on, and develop original content about the Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania for our digital-storytelling start-up.
This internship requires that candidates organize existing stories from social media as well as research/create new stories and carry them out to completion. Candidates should feel comfortable working remotely and engaging the public multiple times weekly via social media on https://www.facebook.com/AnthraciteCoalRegion and working with the team on cross-platform developments.
The Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania has a two-person editorial staff that spends its time in the Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the campus of Temple University.
Interested in working for us? You should:
— be comfortable working remotely
— understand cultural writing for interactive and documentary purposes
— have experience exploring the ethnographic and creative potential of working with an audience to develop communities of users
— have an interest in public history, archives, genealogy and/or community engagement
— be able to engage the public with your writing
— have experience with or an interest in digital curation and citation/attribution
— demonstrate good grammar and relatively clean written copy
— be able to create stories and vignettes around photos and other multimedia as well to include those media elements in your stories
— be willing to work with or learn content management platforms such as Omeka
— be ready to work with the team to develop new directions in the project
— be willing to dedicate at least 10 hours a week to work (we can work with you to provide college credit)
— be flexible with your schedule and in answering communication if an interesting a story require changes

The Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania is an interactive documentary, interpretive, archival, and digital story-telling project representing the extensive social effects and cultural transformations of the Appalachian Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania containing the only reserves of United States’ anthracite coal—through nineteenth-century industrialization, the decline of the coal industry in the middle of the twentieth-century, and the upheavals of deindustrialization that followed. The Anthracite Coal Region coalesces writings, artifacts, interviews, commentary, ethnographic vignettes, oral histories, photographs, maps, books, and letters with user-generated content, user-curated content, and citizen journalism.

We have done all of our work on this site over the past years voluntarily and at no charge to residents in order to serve the community. We could not have produced this page without constant community dialogue. If you enjoy the project and you would like to offer some volunteer time, drop us a line and let us know.

— have access to a computer
— be interested in research of forgotten elements of culture and history
— be willing write down engaging cultural and/or historical stories
